About Us
Vocal Artists of Iowa is a semi-professional choir based in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City whose membership draws primarily upon the region’s community members, music professionals, and music educators. VAoI is a project-based group that performs 5-6 concerts per year, with rehearsals and performance dates dictated by the availability of its constituency. Featured and invited performances have included the Iowa Choral Director’s Association Choral Showcase in 2018 and 2023, the Luther College Dorian Summer Music Festival, the ICDA Summer Symposium, and, most recently, the Midwestern American Choral Directors Association Convention. In addition to regular choral performances, Vocal Artist of Iowa has additionally hosted brief composer residencies, including collaborations with Moira Smiley, Storm Large, Eric Barnum, Z. Randall Stroope, and Stacey Gibbs.

Dr. David Haas
David Haas, Ph.D., is the Founder and Artistic Director of Vocal Artists of Iowa as well as a Choral Director and Digital Music Production Instructor at Iowa City West High School. At West High, Dr. Haas directs the Treble Choir, Iowa City West Singers, and Showtime Show Choir and teaches several sections of Digital Music Production.
David completed his Ph.D. in Music Education at the University of Iowa. Before his time in Iowa City, Haas held church choir and public school teaching positions in Iowa, South Dakota, and Florida. Haas has a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, and an M.M. in Choral Conducting from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where he served as Graduate Teaching Assistant for Undergraduate Conducting as well as Assistant Director for the Tallahassee Community Chorus and the FSU Men’s Glee Club. In addition to conducting and performing, his research interests include audience engagement, incorporating music production coursework into high school curricula, and the fusion of traditional ensembles with digital media. David resides in North Liberty, Iowa, with his loving wife Sarah, daughter Cadence, and son Dawson.

Leslie Hyland
Leslie Hyland is a musician living in Coralville, IA who accompanies Vocal Artists of Iowa, the Quire of Eastern Iowa, and a variety of school choirs in the area. She has been involved with musical productions (playing and directing) at Mount Vernon Lisbon Community Theater, Prairie High School, Iowa City Community Theater, and a number of other theater companies and schools in the Corridor. In addition to accompanying choirs and soloists for recitals and contests, Leslie is a member of the Cedar Rapids Community Orchestra, teaches private lessons, and is an accompanist with the UI Department of Dance.

Adam West is a graduate of Luther College and Iowa City West High School with the hope of becoming a genetic counselor. While at Luther, he was all across the arts, being a member of Luther’s choirs, a lighting designer for the theatre department, as well as an avid ceramicist. Adam’s ideal night fluctuates between being with friends and building a LEGO set with a good movie in the background.
Andrew Robinson is a second-year DMA choral conducting and pedagogy student at the University of Iowa, where he is Assistant Conductor for Kantorei, teaches undergraduate choral conducting and literature, and sings in the University Choir and Student Bach Chorus. In addition to Vocal Artists of Iowa, he performs with and is Assistant Conductor for the Chamber Singers of Iowa City. He directs Voix d’Été, a project-based choir he founded in northwest Indiana. Prior to doctoral studies, he spent ten years as a public-school general music teacher and choral director in Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio, and taught at Valparaiso University. Recent professional highlights include being Chorus Master for Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem” (Chamber Singers) and Opera Chorus Director for “L’amico Fritz” (University of Iowa); conducting masterclasses with Francis Cathlina (University of Memphis), Jennaya Robison (National Lutheran Choir), and Ben Spalding (Spire Chamber Ensemble); presenting on handbells in schools at the IMEA (IN) Conference; induction into Marquis Who’s Who in America; and alumni achievement and teaching awards from Valparaiso University. Ensembles under his direction have performed in Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Disneyland, a state music conference, and a world-premiere major symphonic work. Additionally, Andrew teaches voice lessons, is a church musician and composer, and has extensive theatre experience as an actor, director, and pianist. He rings handbells and serves as Chair of the Indiana All-State Handbell Choir. Andrew earned music degrees from Oberlin College (M.M.T., choral/vocal music education) and Valparaiso University (B.A summa cum laude, vocal performance). He enjoys spending time with his wife—also a music teacher—and son.
Bradley Wilson is a bass from West Des Moines, Iowa. He has performed with many ensembles including the Grammy Award-winning Kansas City Chorale, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Kantorei of Kansas City, and Des Moines Choral Society. Bradley has directed school choirs of all ages. He is currently a choir director at Waukee Middle School. During his time as the director of choirs at Center Point-Urbana High School, the All-State and Opus programs reached school records of accepted students, including multiple All-State Festival soloists. His curricular mixed choirs consistently achieved superior ratings at Large Group Contest. Under his direction, the CPU jazz choir won state champions at the 2023 Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships. His show choir frequently received 1st place rankings in the 3A classification. Bradley was awarded the inaugural East Central Iowa Choral Directors Association Honors Initiative Award in 2022.
Bradley earned his Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering at Iowa State University. He then earned his Masters of Music Education at the University of Kansas.
Caleb Haselhuhn is currently a DMA student in voice at The University of Iowa, where he works as a teaching assistant in voice and diction. He also works as a teaching artist in voice at Coe College and teaches voice lessons at Prairie High School. Caleb has performed with many organizations in the corridor including Theatre Cedar Rapids, Giving Tree Theater, City Circle Theatre Company, and the UI Opera Theatre. He has been a member of VAoI since 2019 and has also performed with Chorale Midwest, Chamber Singers of Iowa City, and UI’s Kantorei. MA in Music: Voice Performance – The University of Iowa

Collette McClellen is in her 22nd year of teaching at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman. She teaches two curricular choirs, Mixed Choir and Lyrica, and one extracurricular Madrigal Choir. Collette is also the vocal director and pit band director for the yearly musical production, and Fine Arts coordinator for the district. She was the district chair of Southeast Iowa for the ICDA for five years and greatly appreciated learning about all that ICDA provides for its teachers. Collette very much enjoys being a guest director for honor choirs, and was the 2019 7th/8th Treble OPUS director.
Born and raised in southeast Iowa, Collette attended the University of Iowa and graduated with Honors in Music and with High Distinction. She was awarded with the Rhodes Dunlap Scholarship, and was designated a Collegiate Scholar, as well as being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Collette received her Master of Education degree through Graceland University with an emphasis in Technology Integration.
Recently, Collette has joined the staff of Iowa Ambassadors of Music and spent three weeks touring Europe with them during the summer of 2023. She is looking forward to their 2025 trip and helping Iowa high school musicians showcase their talent to audiences abroad.
Collette is proud to be a founding member of Vocal Artists of Iowa and greatly enjoys the camaraderie of the group and the leadership and vision of Director David Haas. Being able to perform with such a talented group of individuals truly does bring joy to all those involved.
Collette lives outside of Wellman with her piano-technician tuning and cook-extraordinaire husband Matt, and their four children: Colin, Logan, Fiona, and Adric. She is extremely thankful for their love and support for her musical endeavors, and counts herself very blessed to have them join in music making adventures at home.
Kylie works at Northwest Junior high in the Iowa City School district as a choir and general music teacher. Previously she worked as choir direct at Wilton Public Schools as a 7-12 choir teacher.
Growing up in Mount Vernon, Iowa, Sarah started singing under local choral music legend, Joleen (Nelson) Woods. While not a professional musician, Sarah is a proficient pianist thanks for to the teaching (and abundant patience) of Sharon Peters. Over the years, Sarah has had the privilege of singing in choirs for Weston Noble, Tim & Sandra Peters, David Williams, Mark Babcock, Andrew Last, and most recently David Haas.
A third generation sod farmer, Sarah spends a lot of time in the cab of a tractor, which is fortunate because it is a great place to practice singing choral pieces for upcoming VAoI concerts.
Madeline is a choral educator, singer, and conductor. She is also a dog lover, an avid hiker, and a foodie. She enjoys the community aspects of singing in ensembles and making music with wonderful people.
Andrew Bryant is a graduate of The University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance. He is currently teaching K-12 Music at Montezuma Community Schools.
Lyn has lived in Eastern Iowa for nearly a decade and singing with VAoI is part of why Cedar Rapids is her favorite place she’s ever lived! She earned degrees from Luther College and Arizona State University and performs as a soloists with other local ensembles. Lyn teaches private lessons out of her home and serves as the Director of Music at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. In addition to making & teaching music, Lyn loves to spend time gardening & tending their chickens with her devoted husband, Tom Harrington, who provides VAoI’s behind-the-scenes support.
Kylie works at Northwest Junior high in the Iowa City School district as a choir and general music teacher. Previously she worked as choir direct at Wilton Public Schools as a 7-12 choir teacher.
Ellen Larsen is a 2017 graduate of Luther College with a degree in Social Work. She is currently an Assistant Director of Development with the University of Iowa Center for Advancement covering the Pacific and Mountain Northwest. Ellen is a private pilot who in her freetime, likes to fly her airplane.
Matt Walker received his Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Luther College and his Master of Arts in Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa. He currently serves as the Associate Choral Director at City High School in Iowa City. Choirs under his direction have been invited to perform around the midwest, including performances at Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center in Chicago, the Luther College Dorian Choral Invitational Festival, and the Iowa Choral Showcase.
Matt has extensive experience as a voice teacher and performer, and has sung with such nationally recognized conductors as Weston Noble, Lee Nelson, Dr. Timothy Peter, Dr. Robert Larsen, and Dr. Tim Stalter. His teaching is focused on helping young singers become independent and life-long musicians, so that they might have the opportunity to experience the joy and the meaningful moments that a life in the choral arts can provide.
Lauren Fladland teaches high school choir at Center Point-Urbana High School. She currently serves on the board of the Iowa Choral Directors Association as the Opus Honor Choir Chair and on the board of the Kodaly Educators of Iowa as a Member at Large. Outside of teaching Lauren sings bass in her barbershop quartet “”What 4″” and with Metro Mix Chorus.

Stephanie Goff is a vocalist, actress, and voice teacher in the Cedar Rapids area. Around town she has performed roles with Revival Theatre Company, Old Creamery Theatre, Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, SPT Theatre, and on the stages of Brucemore. For the past several years, Stephanie has had the honor of collaborating with Broadway composer Robert Lindsey Nassif in the development of his latest musical.
As a voiceover artist, she has worked on corporate projects for Volvo, Amazon, and Lowe’s.
Recently, she discovered a passion for acting in independent films and has enjoyed creating in this capacity in the Chicago and Iowa film scene. Website: stephaniegoff.com
Tyler Hagy is an active performer, conductor, and educator, based in Iowa City, Iowa. He currently serves as the Director of Choral Activities at City High School in Iowa City, Iowa. Choirs under his direction have been selected for many featured performances, including at the Luther College Dorian Choral Invitational, the Iowa Choral Showcase, and the Iowa Association of School Boards’ 78th Annual Convention.
He holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music; a Master of Music degree in Choral Studies from the University of Cambridge, UK; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and Theatre/Dance Performance from Luther College. He has studied conducting with Dr. Allen Hightower, Dr. Andrew Last, Stephen Layton, Stephen Cleobury, Timothy Brown, Earl Rivers, and Weston Noble, among many others. He has conducted concerts and festivals in the United States of America, England, Wales, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman.
Hagy has also been seen on stage in many productions. Recent roles include Jamie Wellerstein in The Last Five Years, Benjamin Coffin III in Rent, Ezra Chater in Arcadia, Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing, Truffaldino in The Servant of Two Masters, and Moritz Stiefel in Spring Awakening.
At City High, he conducts the select mixed SATB Concert Choir and the 9-12 Treble Choir, the varsity show choir 4th Ave. Jazz Company, and the extra-curricular Select Treble Ensemble.
In addition to his work at City High, he also serves as the Director of Senior and Youth Choirs at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City, IA.
Pat Fagan is in his second year as Director of Choirs at Washington High School where he conducts Concert Choir, the 10th-12th grade SATB choir, and Washington Singers, the 9th-10th grade SATB choir. He also directs the award-winning varsity show choir, Momentum. Mr. Fagan is a Cedar Rapids native and graduated from Xavier High School in 2010.
Fagan is a 2014 graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education. He served as president of the Nordic Choir and worked as both a personal assistant to choral conductors in the music department and as a teacher’s assistant in the conducting program. He has sung in choirs under the direction of Dr. Andrew Last, Dr. Timothy Peter, Dr. Sandra Peter, and Dr. Allen Hightower.
Mr. Fagan is living the dream in Cedar Rapids with his wife, Allison, their daughters, Annabelle and Charlie, and their two sweet dogs, Rey and Mose. They enjoy watching the Office and a good “Crunch Berry Day” in downtown CR.
Hannah Wollack works for Student Disability Services at the University of Iowa as an Access Consultant, the Exam Services Lead, and as the Interim Deaf and Hard of Hearing Coordinator.
Hannah is excited to be involved in music after taking a three-year hiatus. During this time, she earned an M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of Northern Iowa. Before attending UNI, Hannah attended Luther College where she sang in the Luther College Nordic Choir for three years and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. In her free time, she enjoys listening to podcasts and playing with her dog, Annie.
Bryan Mullen, MBA, BAN, RN is the Cardiovascular Service Line Program Manager at UnityPoint Health, an integrated health system that spans three states in the Midwest. In his role, Bryan influences outcomes improvement across the cardiovascular care continuum by facilitating system-wide initiatives designed to reduce unnecessary variation, streamline workflows, promote cross-market collaboration, and achieve clinical, financial, and operational results. Bryan earned his baccalaureate degree in nursing from Luther College and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Dubuque. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of Foundation2 Crisis Services, an organization that assists access to mental health services throughout Iowa.
While at Luther, Bryan was fortunate to sing with Nordic Choir for two years and enjoy performing in incredible venues in the United States and across Europe. He also had the pleasure of singing with the Luther College Concert Band on a tour of Japan and China. Outside of work Bryan enjoys singing with VAOI, spending time with his partner, cycling, and time with friends and family.
Pier Debes is the director of choral music at South East Junior High School in Iowa City. There, he directs three curricular choirs, Sound Express Show Choir, and teaches general music. Pier holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Education from Knox College of Galesburg, Illinois. While in Galesburg, Pier was an avid performer. He sang in the Knox College Choir, Knox Chamber Singers, and for seven years, he sang in Nova Singers under the direction of Dr. Laura Lane. He was active in theater, and played in numerous ensembles, spanning the genres of jazz, funk, folk, and ska. Before moving to Iowa City, Pier held church choir, college choir, and public school teaching positions in Illinois. In his free time, Pier can be found arranging and composing music, planting things, and spending time with his wife, son, and two dogs.
Katelyn Peterson is currently a teaching assistant at the University of Iowa where she conducts the Voxman Chorale and is actively pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting and Pedagogy with a secondary in Music Education; studying conducting with Dr. Timothy Stalter. Katelyn is also the current the Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Marion, IA. Prior to her studies at UI, Katelyn received her MM in Choral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2022 where she studied with Dr. Zachary Durlam and conducted an entry-level treble clef choir, Alta Voce, as well as the opera choruses. Katelyn earned her Bachelor of Music Education with an emphasis in Choral and General Music and minor in Theatre from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in where she studied conducting with Dr. Jon-Wong Park and Dr. Kristin Tjornehoj. As K-12 educator, Katelyn worked as a guest vocal artist with Reagan IB High School in the Milwaukee Public Schools (2021-2022), directed choirs and taught general music in middle school and high school for the River Falls School District (2016-2020 ) and middle school choir and general music for the New Richmond School District, (2011-2016). In addition to teaching, Katelyn currently serves as the Website & Social Media Manager for the Midwestern American Choral Directors Association (MWACDA), and previously held multiple positions with the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association (WCDA), the Wisconsin School of Music Association (WSMA) and the St. Croix Valley Music Educators Association. Her current research is focused on Cognitive Apprenticeship methods in the collegiate choral rehearsal and the history and evolution of the choral spiritual.
Sarah Haas is a medical speech-language pathologist at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. She serves the inpatient acute population evaluating and treating patients with dysphagia, speech and language disorders, tracheostomies, alternative communication needs and cognitive communication deficits post stroke, TBI, acute illnesses, cardiovascular incidents and various other medical diagnoses. She also specializes as a vocologist and works closely with staff Otolaryngologists in the diagnosing and treating of voice disorders in the outpatient setting. She spends her “free time” with her two kids Cadence and Dawson, her husband David, powerlifting, laughing, watching a true crime show, or enjoying time with friends. Prior to her work as a speech-language pathologist, Sarah served as a K-8 music teacher of elementary general music, middle school general music, and middle school vocal music 6-8th grade. She holds a Master of Science from the Florida State University and a Bachelor of the Arts from Luther College. She is grateful beyond words for the music making, community, friendships and opportunities that VAoI has cultivated since its inception. Proud is an understatement in describing her feelings towards her husband for founding this group so many years ago.
Ryson Stuart is a 2015 graduate of Luther College with a degree in physics. He currently works with children with disabilities in the Iowa City area through the companies ChildServe and Lutheran Services of Iowa, as well as volunteering at Big Brothers Big Sisters. He recently worked in the Clear Creek Amana school district, where he was also a co-founder and member of the advocacy group Better Way Forward. Ryson is an aspiring writer and enthusiastic traveler, and loves to spend time adventuring with friends or playing board games in his free time.
